Daily Update - Mohammad Elkady - (June-08-2022)

1.  What did I do today?

Today I attended CMG Webinar on Modelling Hydraulically Fractured Wells, and I tried to apply some of the concepts. Also, I tried to gather a literature about excessive water production in Unconventional reservoirs.

2.  What did I find interesting/Work on?

·      CMG Webinar: Modelling Hydraulically Fractured Wells

o   Any simulator can handle hydraulic fracturing:

§  IMEX: for simple Black oil or Dry gas modelling

§  STARS: Any thermal Processes

§  GEM: EOR and gas condensate.

o   Fractures present at the start scenario: Modelling Production Only

§  Planar Fractures (Fast and accurate)

·      Specify Half-length, height, conductivity of each frac

·      Modelled through LS-LR-DK model

o   Logarithmic Spacing

o   Local Refinement

o   Dual Permeability

·      You can have two fractures from neighboring wells either connected (to account for the competition between wells) or not connected. Also, you can have uneven half-lengths frac.

·      to effectively do a history match at early behavior you have to look at Conductivity and Half-length, at Middle behavior: NFZ, Natural Fractures and Half length, at Late Behavior: Matrix Properties.

·      Steps to simulate Planner HF

o   First you have to set a template with primary and secondary fractures properties like fracture width, frac permeability, etc.

·      The figure below shows the planner fractures in a 3D view of a reservoir:

§  Complex Fractures

·      More representative of the field

·      Based on micro-seismic data

§  3rd party import from other fracturing softwares

o   Fracture Creation Modelling Injection and Production

§  Low Fidelity (Compaction/Dilation Curves)

·      Simple model that relates Permeability/transmissibility to pressure

·      Model the creation of SRV

§  Medium Fidelity

·      Fully Incorporate the Geomechanics to calculate the stresses in the rock

·      Failed rock represents the permeability enhancement and that modeled after the modelling the natural fractures

·      Used especially to see the effects of Well to well interactions.

o   High Fidelity (Node Splitting)

§  More advanced option of the medium fidelity

§  Determine the hydraulic fracture half-length, aperture and height for Planar Fractures.

§  Visualize and analyze the fracture growth

§  Uses Dual grid model (traditional reservoir grid + Geo Grid)

§  Nodes of the geo grid splits open when the effective Stress < tensile failure.

3.  What will I do next?

I will keep practicing using CMG Software and I will also try to gather literature about excessive water production in unconventional reservoirs.
